HOW TO BUY A COWHIDE

Because all cowhides are unique (their size and shape, and colour if bought natural, depends on the animal the hide has come from), many suppliers will show you samples of products which they can aim to obtain for you. Of course it is always preferable to see the exact cowhide you want to purchase in person before agreeing to any sale, but if this is not possible, there are several things to ask the salesperson before you sign on the dotted line.

Generally, cowhides are produced from animals which have been slaughtered for meat, meaning that the cowhide is the secondary product and that the farmers which have bred the cattle were more concerned with the quality of the beef, not the hide. This is one of the reasons that cowhides vary in quality and size. Make sure you have an idea of the specific measurements of the hide (and make sure it fits into the area you have in mind for it)!

Hides can be treated in a number of ways, so it is important to ask the salesperson which method has been used in the conditioning of the hide you’re interested in. Many wholesalers state that chrome or chromium treatments are preferable, as they improve the flexibility of the hide and prevent cracking or shredding in later life. Some producers prefer to use natural oils to soften the hide and the hair, which of course means less chemicals but may shorten the life of your hide.
